Falcons boys bring home the gold |

The Foothills Composite Falcons were crowned Foothills Athletic Council high school boys’ soccer league champions on June 1 after defeating the Strathmore High School Spartans in a shootout.
Goaltender Brent Buchholz was the Falcons’ hero making a diving save to stop the Spartans’ last penalty kick clinching the championship for Okotoks. The Falcons and Spartans had scored on their first penalty shots before Buchholz’s save.
“The shootout was really nerve wracking for me, but I was pretty pumped when I saved it,” said Buchholz. “As a goalie you have to guess which side to go for in penalty kicks and I just guessed the right way. I was so excited to win the championship for the second year in a row.”
Falcons coach Clinton Dunford won the league championship with the Falcons last year as a player, and has now come full circle winning the title as a coach.

A Foothills Composite Falcon didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when the whistle blew to end regulation time in the South Central Zone Tier I girls rugby final.
Dani Slamko’s mixed emotions were as result of a painful injury to her ribs, but also her teammate Morgan Schultz had just worked her way into the try zone to tie the game at 17-17 on the final play of the zone championship.
Slamko forgot all about her ribs 15 minutes later when the Falcons scored two tries in the overtime period to beat the Strathmore Spartans 27-17 to win the zone championship in Calgary on June 2 to earn a trip to provincials.

Mustangs marching into playoffs |

The Highwood high school (HHS) ladies Mustangs rugby team marched out onto the field against the Foothills Composite high school Falcons on Thursday night and dismantled their MD rivals.
The ladies came out firing on all cylinders, as they ran over the Falcons to score 20 points in the first half of the game.
"The first half was very spirited, as the lady Mustangs worked as a team together to secure the 20-0 lead," said head coach Bill Young.

The Foothills Composite Falcons advance to league finals after shutting out their rivals the Holy Trinity Academy (HTA) Knights by a score of 4-0 on May 30.
The Falcons will face-off against the Strathmore High School Spartans on June 1 for the Foothills league championship title. Strathmore defeated Canmore on Monday’s other semifinal by a score of 3-1.
With about 10 minutes left in the half, the Falcons scored their third goal with a snipe from right outside the goalie’s box that just slid past the Knight’s goalitender.

Knights avenge last year's title loss |

The Holy Trinity Academy Knights didn’t wait too long to avenge their loss in the Big Sky Rugby Union Senior boys final last year.
The Knights downed the Bow Valley Bobcats 34-0 at Cochrane on Thursday. The Bobcats defeated Holy Trinity Academy (HTA) in the league final last June.
“I didn’t have to say much before the game, the boys were ready,” said Knights’ coach Joe Buck. “Bow Valley never really threatened the whole game.”
Buck said despite the Knights having just three Grade 12 players, he believes it’s an improved squad from last year’s team.
“We are still young and they want to improve — that’s the best thing about these guys,” Buck said. “The focus was that we wanted to control the game and we played with discipline.”
